Tender issued for Bay Roberts school
The long-awaited replacement of Coley’s Point Primary moved a step closer to reality after the province issued a construction tender for a new school in Bay Roberts.
The provincial government has issued a public tender call to build a school to replace Coley’s Point Primary.
According to a news release issued Friday, Nov. 9, construction should begin in 2019, with a completion date in early 2021.
The new school, which will be located behind Amalgamated Academy on Eric Dawe Drive, will serve students in grades K-3. The single-story structure will be 4,100 square metres and feature 18 classrooms, a gymnasium, music room, cafeteria and other amenities.
Harbour Grace-Port de Grave MHA Pam Parsons said in the same release she was overjoyed by the news, adding she expects the new school will have a positive effect on the community.
“I’m committed, and our government is committed to providing infrastructure, which includes the newest features, for the betterment of our children’s education today and future generations,” she said.
Residents of Bay Roberts have been advocating for years to get a new school to replace Coley’s Point Primary. That building is now 66 years old, and the local school council has complained in the past about over-populated classrooms and a lack of air ventilation, windows and proper cafeteria for the aging building.
