Saskatchew­an loses to host UNB in gold-medal game

FREDERICTO­N — Cam Braes scored four goals to lead the University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds to a 5-3 victory over the Saskatchew­an Huskies on Sunday for the Canadian men’s university hockey championsh­ip.

It was the second straight national title for the Varsity Reds, and seventh in the school’s history.

Mark Simpson also scored for New Brunswick and Philippe Maillet had four assists.

Connor Gay scored one goal and set up the other two for Saskatchew­an. Jordan Fransoo and Kohl Bauml had the other goals.

Etienne Marcoux stopped 18 shots for the win, while Jordan Cooke, an alum of the WHL’s Kelowna Rockets, made 31 saves in a losing effort.

In the women’s final, rookie defenceman Taylor Kezama scores 8:13 into double overtime as the University of Alberta Pandas defeated the McGill Martlets 2-1 on Sunday. It’s the eighth national title in the program’s history, which is the most all-time in U Sports, but the first since 2010.

Amy Boucher also scored for No. 6 Alberta, while fifth-year goalie Lindsey Post made 40 saves in her final career game, earning her first national gold.

Earlier in the day, Amelia Boughn stopped all 21 shots she faced to help lift the top-ranked UBC Thunderbir­ds to a 2-0 win over the No. 7 Concordia Stingers for the bronze medal.

Cassandra Vilgrain and Logan Boyd scored for UBC, with both goals coming on the power play. The T-Birds were captained by Stephanie Schaupmeye­r of Kelowna.
