Thousands driven to take in World of Wheels car show

Attendance at 20th annual event among best ever, thanks in part to sunny skies

Peachland’s World of Wheels car show on Sunday was one of the best-attended editions of the 20year event.

About 500 vehicles were on display along Beach Avenue, admired by an estimated 10,000 car enthusiasts who took advantage of the fine holidayweekend weather.

“The show couldn’t have been any better,” organizer Pam Cunningham said Monday. “We were completely full in terms of registrations and attendance.”

Bands played throughout the afternoon in Cousins Parks in a new attraction for this year’s show.

As well, a shuttle bus service, operating from a strip mall outside the downtown area, proved a reliable and popular way for car show enthusiasts to reach World of Wheels without trying to find parking themselves.

“We’re very grateful to Troy Fisher, a local realtor, for paying for the two buses,” Cunningham said.

“If we didn’t have those buses, probably half the people who wanted to see the show wouldn’t have been able to get there.”

Winners of this year’s top show awards:

— Mayor’s Choice and Chick Pick: 1958 Corvette, owned by Rob Oltmanns of Peachland.

— Firefighter’s Choice: 1956 Beetle Sedan Deluxe, owned by Jared Hurst.

— People’s Choice: 1939 Chev Coupe, owned by Gary and Darlene Winthrop.

— RCMP Choice: 1955 Chev Bel Air, owned by Jack Allard.

— Coolest Car, a hotrod owned by a man who gave his name only as Julio.

A number of World of Wheels organizers are now ending their involvement with the non-profit group, and Cunningham hopes others will step up to replace them. If interested, contact her through the World of Wheels website, www.peachlandcarshow.com.
