Gently used children’s books needed for kids here and abroad

-

Niteo is collecting gently used children’s books to distribute to the most vulnerable families in our community. Together with Mamas for Mamas, Niteo will collect and distribute age-appropriate reading material to help “Beat the Summer Slide” to households with limited resources.

Our objectives are to promote reading at home, improve literacy and recycle reading materials

The "Summer Slide" is the tendency for students, especially those from low-income families, to lose some of the achievement gains they made during the previous school year. Kids who read beat the summer slide.

The public is invited to donate gently used children's books (age 0-18) on May 27 at the Secure Rite Mobile Storage Yard at 726 Clement Ave., from 9 a.m. to 1p.m. Alternatively, Mamas for Mamas will be accepting books at The Hub at Pearson Road Elementary on today and Thursday between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

More information to come on the Beat the Summer Slide - Literacy Series About Niteo Africa Society: Niteo Africa Society is a Kelowna based, grass roots, registered charity that promotes quality education for all children. Literacy is the answer to ending the cycle of poverty. For the past 10 years, Niteo has collected books locally from schools, libraries and households. These books are packed into shipping containers and sent to communities in Uganda or South Sudan where the need is great. Upon arrival, the container is fitted with doors, windows and shelving and becomes a community library. Niteo has established 11 Literacy centres in East Africa and South Sudan and hundreds of reading corners. Locally, the charity has been able to save more than 100 tons of books from the landfill.
