Music and fashion this weekend

- ANNA JACYSZYN

I use to drive a British racing green Fiat Punto Cabriolet.

In England, having a soft top is like going through a car wash 20 times a day. Eventually, the rubber seals started loosening, and my car began leaking. I always had plastic on the seats when it was parked and a boot (trunk) full of towels to sit on when I needed to drive it.

Most of the time, it was a tedious bother that I got used to, but everything changed when the sun came out, and, with the push of a button, the roof neatly packed itself away and I would zoom around the streets of London with a glorious smile and a pair of Italian shades like a movie star in my convertible coupe.

That’s what happened in Kelowna over the weekend.

Did anyone else notice that the city just exploded with activity and people? OK, I realize it was a holiday long weekend, but it seemed like everybody had that convertible attitude; sports cars with cranked stereos, bikers in all that lyra regalia, and hiker, walkers sauntering like the most beautiful people accessorized by strollers and roller skates. It was parade of goingson, but, sadly, no water sports due to the fullness of the lake.

And thank you to all the volunteers I see working on holding back the flooding.

******** Summer is here. Twin Fiddle Express is in Kelowna to perform at the Rutland United Church, 1370 Rutland Road North on Saturday, May 27 at 7 p.m.

Renowned Canadian fiddle champion Scott Woods, originally from Fergus, Ont., lived amongst a pedigree of fiddle players, but the most prominent influence was his dad. After studying classical violin, he always went back to the ditties he played on the porch and knew that the good ol’ traditional country, western swing, country gospel and old time classics changed him from violinist to fiddler.

The show is pack with toe-tapping tunes and quirky showmanship that will definitely be worth the ticket price. Joining him on stage will be: Kendra (Wood) Norris, Steve Piticco, Patrick Linton and Bill Carruthers.

I watched a few YouTube videos and thoroughly enjoyed this family friendly kind of entertainment with amazing bow skills and fiery melodies. Tickets are $25 for adults and $10 for children. If you are under six, then you get a free pass to a great time. Advance tickets are on sale at the church office on 250-765-5141

******** The First United Church is hosting an indoor garage sale also on Saturday from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m.

If you are interested in doing a little spring cleaning yourself, you can rent a table for $25 and sell your wares. To register, email firstunited@telus.net (attention Mairi Forsyth). Registration is also available at the church desk.

******** Its festival time at 541 Bernard Avenue on Saturday from 3 – 8 p.m., when the House of the Caribbean Kitchen hosts its annual barbecue fundraiser.

With live reggae music and delicious food, this might be just the place to be to get into the mood of a long hot summer.

All monies raised will help support the Okanagan Festival.

******** Anyone interested in clothes and fashion will be excited to hear that on Sunday, May 28, there will be a fashion show and exhibition of vintage clothing from 1939, the austere war years, through to 1955, when fashion was innovative and luxurious.

Canadian Federation Of University Women (CFUW) is honored to host an Ivan Sayers fundraiser: From Rationing to Ravishing. Sayer is the curator emeritus at the Museum of Vancouver and has been producing lectures, exhibitions and fashion shows on clothing and social history for museums and organizations for over 40 years. Arguably, he has one of the finest privately owned collections of period clothing in Canada with garment and accessories dating from circa 1690 to present day.

This fundraiser will be held at the Coast Capri Hotel to support CFUW. Tickets are $65 which you can purchase through pjlaing2@yahoo.com or at the door (cash only) This is an afternoon party to begin at 12:30 p.m. with a cash bar, decadent desserts, coffee or tea and some fancy silent auction, raffle and door prizes.

Enjoy this glorious, long awaited sun, but stay smart and wear a hat, lotion and stay hydrated, I will be right here again next week and hope you will too.
