Condo owners will be out for a while

- By ANDREA PEACOCK

Water’s Edge condo residents who watched as their building went up in flames last Saturday will not be going home anytime soon, says George Mapson, strata president. About 40 of the 65 units in Waters Edge were compromised in the fire started at the Waters Edge North tower on Truswell Road, said Mapson.

Water’s Edge North had been under construction when it burned to the ground last weekend.

The fire spread to the adjacent Water’s Edge and Walnut Grove Motel.

It could be at least two years before Water’s Edge residents are able to move back in, said Mapson.

“It’s going to be much longer than people expect,” he said. “There was water that was six inches deep in the hallways.”

A restoration company has been working in the building doing the cleanup.

“The first phase will take months to get the building stable so we can begin to do the reconstruction,” said Mapson.

Starting Monday, owners will be able to begin entering the building with their insurance adjusters.

“The strata council is responsible for the building, including the walls, ceilings and floors, and owners are responsible for any contents that need to be repaired,” said Mapson.

Water’s Edge North, which was unoccupied at the time, is separate from Waters Edge, and the strata has nothing to do with it, said Mapson.

“The next thing is to get the building so we can start deconstructing where it needs to be deconstructed, then we can reconstruct it to get it where it was before,” he said.

“This is a major claim.”
