Handyman would like nothing better than to scare you silly

Kelowna man and wife go all out with annual Halloween display in aid of food bank

The Kelowna house where Staci Coxe grew up is now home to levitating corpses, bloodsmeared ghouls and flesh-eating zombies.

Oh, Coxe still lives there, too — happily so.

Her yard, garden and garage at 945 Grenfell Rd., off Ethel Street, are only temporarily also occupied by the undead, all of them creations of her husband Paul.

“I’m more into Christmas. But Paul, he really likes Halloween,” Coxe said Sunday. “And this year, he’s gone all out.”

The Coxes have been transforming their property into a Halloween showcase for several years, drawing 800 fright-seekers last year and collecting 181 kilograms of groceries for the food bank. But they’ve made it even more elaborate this season, using every conceivable space for witches and their ilk.

There’s a wobbly bridge, two projectors for scary movies, tombstones, a fortune teller’s parlour, coffins, and an untold number of hiding spots from which neighbourhood volunteers pop out to scare those who dare to enter.

Paul, a mechanic with Kelowna Regional Transit, is a handy guy who’s made most of the props himself.

“He starts sometime in September,” Staci said. “And as soon as it comes down, he’ll probably start thinking about next Halloween.”

The display opens this Friday, at 6 p.m. It continues Saturday, Sunday and Halloween night from 6-9 p.m.
