Christmas should be about giving

-

Dear Editor: Christmas is fast approaching unfortunately. I used to just adore Christmas and had some great memories growing up.

I was a true Star Wars kid, meaning that I grew up at that perfect age of seven when the original Star Wars came out and it was the greatest movie idea ever. The mega success of Star Wars brought on the the greatest movie sequel ever, still to this day... the Empire Strikes Back in 1980.

Why am I talking so much Star Wars, you ask? I really appreciated Christmas back then and my grandest memories, including being in Hawaii one Christmas, related to all the Star Wars figures I was so spoiled with. But I always super appreciated and showed it.

These days there is just far too much commercialism and greed. Christmas tunes now begin on Nov. 1 and Christmas ads begin before Halloween. To look forward to Christmas and appreciate this time of year more, why can’t ads and music just start Dec. 1 as that gives 24 full days leading up before the big day? And for some, less sad memories to think about until it’s closer to the time.

Christmas to me was once an awesome time of year and I’m hoping to feel that great giving spirit again one day.

All that being said, I really feel if one cannot text/write out/think the word Christmas instead of using Xmas, then that person should be penalized and not be able to enjoy Christmas with others.

They should have to go and work in a soup kitchen like some other caring souls do or just go into the office and do some work all alone. By using the term Xmas, you do not care/appreciate about why you are having this day off work.

Please bring the true Christmas spirit back everyone and stop the lazy Xmas spelling madness. You know who you are so stop it!

May the “force” be with you this Christmas ... and also with you! Nol Preen Kelowna
