Senator Beyak need not resign

-

Dear editor: After watching the CBC program Power and Politics, with regards to letters posted by Senator Lynn Beyak and the call for her to take down the letters, I decided to go to her site and see for myself .

All the letters are posted and most deal with comments from Canadians with regards to the residential school program. After listening to the press, I thought that the letters were going to be racist in content.

What I found were letters from Canadian’s pointing out their experience with aboriginal friends, co-workers , folks who worked in residential schools who just wanted to point out that there were some good sides to the schools.

They did not in any way excuse the abuse that was done, but shared their information from knowing and or working at these schools.

I am not going to judge these people who expressed their opinions and exercised their freedom of speech, but I am very concerned that freedom of speech is under attack if Beyak is suspended from the Senate.

Please take a few minutes and go to her site and read the letters, that is what freedom of speech is all about.

I must say this though, bad things were done and those that perpetuated these should be called to justice.

I have yet to hear of any effort to arrest individuals and or organizations outside the government for the abuse at these schools. Bob Otway Penticton
