One program may bring you in the door, but you’ll Ànd many more once you’re inside

- BY FRANKIE KUSHNER

Our warmest welcome to the ladies and gentlemen who have recently joined our Activity Centre.

Regardless which program tweaked your interest you are encouraged to participate in any of the multitude of activities our centre has to offer at no additional fee.

We presently have a diversity of approximately 30 activities to choose from ranging from social gatherings with entertainment to programs featuring mind and/or mind-and-motion stimulation.

Please remember to pick up our monthly bulletins at the front door and to check the notices pinned to the bulletin board located in the hallway.

The West Kelowna Seniors Centre is located at 3661 Old Okanagan Highway (next to the fire hall).

————— The term “use it or lose it” is commonly used. Our minds work that way. Constant stimulation by feeding the brain with new information and activities is a good thing.

Without mental stimulation, our minds become as out of shape as non-exercised bodies.

During prime years, our brains are stimulated through deadlines, obligations and constant activities involving memory, judgment and reasoning.

As the years accumulate, seniors can become passive and inactive resorting to television, thus minimizing active brain activity.

Research has established links between diminishing brain stimulation and increased risks of dementia of various forms.

When both body and mind are connected and stimulated, the senior years can be a wonderful stage of life.

As a matter of fact, many active older adults avoid mental decline well into the ninth decade of

life and beyond.

Whether your participation in the Westside Senior Activity Centre is for mental stimulation, physical exercise or social connections the health and happiness rewards of camaraderie cannot be underestimated.

————— New to the centre this season is our spirited canasta group, which currently enjoys an active membership of Àve tables comprised of enthusiastic couples and vibrant singles. More participants and spares are always welcome.

————— We are beginning the new month with April Fool’s Day, which is no joke. Today, the average adult’s lives severely lack levity drastically decreased to only a few laughs per day compared to eight laughs per hour enjoyed by a Àve year old child. The science is clear. We would all beneÀt from living healthier lives by trying to navigate humorously through the frustrations and slights that we face in our daily lives. Humour is a powerful mechanism which helps to deal with physical and psychological pain.

————— In conjunction with our regular programs the following social gatherings are planned for April. We invite you to come out and enjoy yourselves!

April 3 – 1:30 p.m. — stand up comedy by Dan Summers.

April 10 – 1:30 p.m. — Vic The Fiddler & His Keys
