Science students among the best

Two Kelowna students have been awarded third place at the Canada Wide Science Fair in Ottawa.

Kate MacMillan and Ainsley Horton, Grade 10 students at Kelowna Secondary School, competed in the science fair in the intermedia­te category in innovation.

Their project, Pitting Against Artificial Preservati­ves, investigat­ed the natural oxidizing properties of avocado pits and was extended to compare the efficacy of natural and synthetic preservati­ves to prevent oxidation of the avocado flesh.

The bronze medal win came with a $1,000 entrance scholarshi­p sponsored by Western University of London, Ont.

This was MacMillan’s second year competing at the national science fair and Horton’s third year.
