Walk for water today
Harlem Globetrotters on hand for event to raise money for clean water projects in developing nations
Hundreds of people are expected today at the Kelowna 6K for Water event featuring the Harlem Globetrotters helping raise money for World Vision Canada’s clean water projects in developing nations.
6K for Water is so named because six kilometres is the average distance those in developing countries have to walk to find water.
Today’s fundraiser kicks off with a breakfast at the Delta Grand hotel, where the Globetrotters will lead a warm-up for the participants who will walk, run or roll the six-kilometre route starting at 10 a.m. at nearby Tugboat Bay.
Before the walk, at 9 a.m., there will be a few speakers on the Tugboat Bay Stage, including World Vision Canada CEO Michael Messenger, and a declaration of World Vision Kelowna 6K for Water Day.
After the walk, at 11:30 a.m., the Globetrotters will perform some of their basketball feats.
This is the second annual 6K for Water event in Kelowna, but it’s the first one involving the Globetrotters.
“We’re pumped to be in Kelowna,” said Globetrotter Briana (Hoops) Green.
“Seeing water projects in Mozambique has inspired us to work for clean water for kids everywhere. Giving back is important to us, so being part of the Kelowna 6K where everyone shares a similar passion is exciting.”
Last year’s Kelowna 6K for Water raised enough money to provide clean water to 5,200 children.
