There’s never been a better time to adopt a cat from the SPCA

SPCA offering 50% off adoption fee for adult cats through July 29, and senior cats are an even better deal

Bert the cat may not be the cutest feline at the Kelowna SPCA. Or the youngest. Or the most cuddly. But Bert is one super-relaxed cat and he’d make a fine addition to any petfriendly family, shelter manager Sean Hogan says.

“He’s just one of those cats who’d fit right in at any home. Right away, he’ll act as if he’s never been anywhere else,” Hogan said.

Bert’s problem, not that it is a problem, is his age. He’s 14 years old, and such senior cats aren’t the first ones would-be adopters seek out at the shelter.

“Most people wanting to adopt cats go straight for the kittens when they come in,” Hogan said.

So along with Bert, there are 39 adult cats waiting to be adopted. To try to help them out the door, the shelter is offering a 50 per cent reduction on adoption fees and microchipping.

Instead of paying about $160, people now can get an older cat for $80. A further price break of 50 per cent is offered for cats over seven years old, so Bert or one of his longlived pals can be adopted for about $40.

With more than 45 cats and kittens, the shelter is slightly over its capacity of 38 felines.

The adoption price cuts for older cats are available until July 29. The shelter is at 3785 Casorso Rd.

Sometimes, older cats that aren’t adopted are sent to other BC SPCA shelters to try to find them a home.

“I would rather stay in Kelowna,” Bert is believed to have said in cat language. “Someone please adopt me.”
