Lions acquire defensive lineman, Lemon, from Argos

-

VANCOUVER — The B.C. Lions added depth on their defensive line by acquiring Shawn Lemon from the Toronto Argonauts on Tuesday.

A player to be named later goes to Toronto in the deal.

The 29-year-old Lemon, a nine-year CFL veteran, was in his third season with the Argos. He has five tackles, one sack and one forced fumble this year. Lemon was a CFL East all-star in 2016. The native of Charleston, S.C., has now been on the active or practice roster of seven of nine CFL teams. He joins a Lions team that is last in the CFL West with nine sacks this season.

After a bye week, the Lions return to action Aug. 4 in Calgary against the Stampeders.

Andrew Harris, Trevor Harris and Sinopoli named top performers

TORONTO — Winnipeg running back Andrew Harris, Redblacks quarterback Trevor Harris and Ottawa receiver Brad Sinopoli were named the CFL’s top performers for Week 6.

Andrew Harris rushed for 161 yards and a touchdown and added 16 receiving yards and a TD to lead the Blue Bombers to a 38-20 win at Toronto on Saturday. Sinopoli reeled in a game-high 171 receiving yards on 11 catches and scored a touchdown as the Redblacks edged the visiting B.C. Lions 29-25 on Friday night.

Trevor Harris completed 30-of-44 passes for 363 yards and a TD in Ottawa’s victory that helped the Redblacks solidify their hold on first place in the CFL East.

INTEREST IN OWENS

Terrell Owens’ CFL future isn’t dead just yet.

The Edmonton Eskimos released the former NFL receiver from their negotiation list Friday, thus making Owens a free agent. On Monday, Jason Staroszik, the Edmonton-based agent handling Owens’ CFL negotiations, said that another team has expressed an interest in his client but couldn’t provide specific details.

“I can’t speak to it yet,” Staroszik said. “There is interest.”

Earlier this month, Owens activated a 10-day window to receive a contract offer from the Eskimos by Tuesday. Edmonton placed Owens, who last played in the NFL in 2010, on its 45-man negotiation list June 19, shortly after he posted a video of himself running a 4.43-second 40-yard dash.

Owens has been out of football since 2012 when he had 35 catches for 420 yards and 10 TDs over eight games with the Allen Wranglers of the Indoor Football League. Owens signed with the NFL’s Seattle Seahawks during training camp that year, but was released.

Owens played for five teams — San Francisco, Philadelphia, Dallas, Buffalo and Cincinnati — over 16 NFL seasons.
