In praise of those courteous drivers
Dear Editor: All too often, the dialogue between cyclist and motorists is one of hostility.
As both a motorist and a cyclist, I see the debate from both sides.
In either mode, I try to be aware of, and courteous towards, others.
While cycling, I usually signal my turns, obey traffic lights and don’t run stop signs. But I’m not perfect.
As a driver, I keep an eye out for cyclists, give them room and don’t cut them off. Again, I’m not perfect. No one is.
I cycle somewhere in Kelowna just about every day of the year — staying off my bike only in really inclement weather.
I am constantly amazed and pleased at how courteous and bike aware most drivers are.
Of particular note is the intersection of Gordon Drive and Clement Avenue. I often come off the bike path there, heading west, to cross the right turn lane on my way to climb Knox Mountain.
Almost always, drivers making a right turn stop to let me cross, even though that delays their entry onto Clement.
Invariably, drivers on Water Street stop to let me cycle onto the crosswalk as I head away from Tugboat Beach. And there are all those drivers who wait for me to pass before pulling onto or off the road.
I try to acknowledge each of these people with a wave of thanks.
Much has been said about how discourteous drivers are in Kelowna. There are always the few who spoil the reputation of others.
My experience as both a cyclist and driver is that the vast majority drivers in Kelowna are good, conscientious and courteous. It’s time to acknowledge them and thank them. And I do. Rob Munro Kelowna
