The best option: none of the above
Dear editor: I have just spent my due diligence looking at the proportional representation options in the coming referendum. I have one question. How do I vote “none of the above?
First past the post is deeply flawed and should be replaced. The three choices we are offered don't appear to be much better. The devil is in the details and the details are poorly explained perhaps because they are over complicated.
Here's my simple solution, if the candidate I vote for in my riding is unsuccessful, he are she should be able to transfer his supporters votes to another candidate. Eventually 100% of cast votes province wide will end up being represented by one of the 87 successful candidates. No vote is meaningless.
Perhaps one MLA will represent the 6% from 86 other ridings. Perhaps two candidates will have to pool their votes to win a single seat between them.
My definition of Proportional is every vote counts. I'm also OK with my candidate finding a sub if he can't win my riding. I trusted them with my vote, I trust them to transfer my vote to an acceptable alternate. I don't like the idea of some backroom person I will never meet selecting people who didn't put their name on a ballot, to represent the result of a mathematical formula.
Keep it simple, keep it direct, keep it human.
