Heat’s Matthews earns accolade as 2nd star of week for Canada West

-

With success comes accolades and for UBC Okanagan Heat men’s basketball guard Triston Matthews that meant earning the second star of the week in the Canada West conference awards. The third-year player from North Vancouver starred in both of UBCO’s wins last weekend, producing 22 points and 12 rebounds in an 84-79 triumph over the visiting Brandon Bobcats and following that up with a 20-point effort in the rematch, which saw the Heat prevail 83-82 to stay undefeated on the young season with a 4-0 record for the first time in school history.

Matthews is currently averaging 18.8 points per game and 7.45 rebounds thus far.

The Heat will try to keep rolling tonight when they host the Lethbridge Pronghorns (2-0) in a battle of unbeaten teams. Tip-off is 8 p.m. at the UBCO gym in Kelowna, with Saturday’s rematch to start at 7 p.m.

The Heat are winless against Lethbridge, with an 0-5 record dating back to 2011-12.

The Heat women’s basketball team (0-4) is also hosting the Pronghorns (2-0), tipping off at 6 p.m. tonight and 5 p.m. on Saturday.
