Amicro-company in Oliver has won B.C.’s biggest small business award. “I’m shocked we won,” said Tony Munday of Munday Media & Design.

“The company is just me and two staff, but we do excellent work and we support the community and the community supports us.”

Munday’s win was in the Premier’s People’s Choice category, the marquee of 10 categories.

Munday picked up the trophy, $1,500 cash prize and one-year membership for all Small Business B.C. education and mentoring programs at the awards ceremony last week at the Vancouver Convention Centre.

Munday’s two employees nominated the business without him knowning and Small Business B.C. deemed the company worthy of nomination.

Munday then spearheaded a traditional media and social media campaign to garner votes from the public.

“Once nominated, it was up to us to spread the word and get votes,” said Munday.

“The people of Oliver, and the whole province, really came through with their support for us.”

Munday designs and prints all kinds of stationary and signs and offers logo, branding and website services to businesses and municipalities throughout the province.

It’s recently done work for the Town of Oliver, the Village of Midway and the B.C. Tourism Industry Conference.

New chamber prez

Nikki Csek, co-owner of marketing agency Csek Creative, is the new president of the 1,200-member Kelowna Chamber of Commerce.

Csek was previously executive vice-president of the chamber and moved up to president with the chamber’s annual nomination-and-election cycle.

While directors are elected by members, the president’s post is filled using the move-up system when directors vote amongst themselves to determine executive vice-president.

That means when the new 2019-20 board gets together, it will determine 2020-21 president by choosing who will be groomed for the job as executive vice-president.

The rest of the 2019-20 board is made up of:

– past-president: Carmen Sparg, Silver Lining Management

– Andrew Brunton, Pushor Mitchell Lawyers

– Ron Cannan, Interior Savings Credit Union

– Derek Gratz, UBC Okanagan

– Andrew Ingenhorst, Grant Thornton Accountants

– Angela Nagy, GreenStep Solutions

– Justin O’Connor, Sotheby’s Realty

– Pamela Pearson, Sentes Automotive Group

Greyhound site sold

Kelowna Chrysler Dodge Jeep has purchased the former Greyhound Bus property on Enterprise Way for $5.25 million.

The car dealership is using the 9,200-square-foot building and two-acre site to store vehicles right now.

While a long-term plan hasn’t been revealed, it will likely be used for future expansion of the Chrysler dealership.

The property, which is right across the street and beside Kelowna Chrysler Dodge Jeep, went up for sale for $6 million in September 2018 in anticipation of Greyhound shuttering all operations in Western Canada on Oct. 31. email: steve.macnaull@ok.bc.ca

The property is zoned C4 (urban centre commercial) and

C10 (service commercial), which allows everything from hotels, condominiums, apartments and office buildings to gas stations, retail stores, restaurants and light manufacturing.

Profitability and sustainability must go hand-in-hand, according to urban planner Gordon Harris.

Harris, who is president of Simon Fraser University Community Trust and has his own real estate consulting firm, is the guest speaker at the next lunch meeting of the Okanagan chapter of the Urban Development Institute on Thursday at the Coast Capri Hotel.

He’ll talk about how government regulations and consumer demand to curb climate change are forcing developers to build green, yet still figure out a way to make a profit.

Tickets are $45 for institute members, $65 for non-members, at UDIOkanagan.ca.
