Chiefs take Steam out of Summerland

Kelowna game away from advancing into 3rd round of playoffs

After consecutiv­e blowout victories on the road, the Kelowna Chiefs are one game away from the third round of the KIJHL playoffs.

Playoff scoring leader Brody Dale scored the go-ahead goal in the first period and Braeden Mitchell kicked out 29 shots for the shutout as the Kelowna Chiefs beat the Steam 5-0 Tuesday at the Summerland Arena.

Kelowna leads the best-of-seven Okanagan Division final series 3-1 and can close it out with a win tonight at 7 p.m. at the Rutland Arena.

Jordan Lowry, Tyler Love, Devin Sutton and Land Paddison with his playoff-leading ninth goal also scored for the Chiefs, who led 1-0 and 3-0 at the period breaks.

Dale has 18 points while teammate Ryan Stack and Kimberley’s Brock Palmer each have 16.

Jared Breitkreuz made 30 saves for the Steam, who lost 7-1 in Game 3 on Monday.

If the Steam can stay alive, Game 6 would be played Friday at 7:30 p.m. in Summerland. Game 7, also if necessary, would be Sunday in Kelowna.

In the Doug Birks Division final, the Revelstoke Grizzlies edged the 100 Mile House Wranglers 3-2 in overtime Tuesday to take a commanding 3-0 edge in the series.

Beaver Valley Nitehawks beat the visiting Nelson Leafs to grab a 2-1 lead in the Neil Murdoch Division final.

Kimberley Dynamiters swept the Fernie Ghostrider­s 4-0 in the Eddie Mountain Division final and will meet the winner of the Beaver-ValleyNels­on series in the Kootenay Conference final.
