Sharing a part of receiving from the food bank

- By RICK MADDISON

Elexis breathes through a beautiful silver necklace that hides a hole in her neck; she recently underwent a tracheotomy, as her paralyzed vocal cords were making life difficult.

For Elexis, the Central Okanagan Food Bank is full of Angels who are supportive every time she comes to collect her hamper. She gets a few looks when she pulls her monthly hamper onto the bus and rides home, but she does it for Nevaeh.

Nevaeh, “Heaven” spelled backward, is her 13-year-old daughter.

She’s sassy like many teens, but has a big heart and has volunteered herself at the food bank.

Altruism runs deep in this family. When Elexis receives frozen hamburger meat from the food bank, she makes a big chili and shares it with homeless people in her area.

No matter what she has, she makes sure to share it with others.

Once Elexis discovered how much is thrown away by stores after a due date is reached, she started to watch various dumpsters for the purpose of collecting unopened cosmetics and creating gift bags, which she then donates to Kelowna Women’s Shelter.

This kindness brightens so many days, and it puts a smile on Elexis’s face to help these women in her community.

Elexis has high praise for the innovation shown by the Central Okanagan Food Bank, especially regarding their Stretchable Soup Program, which takes undesirable produce and turns it into soup.

Elexis’s life goal is to help spread the understanding of how much we throw away and how we could repurpose it to help feed the world. What she does with makeup alone should serve as a great reminder of what’s possible.
