KNEE PAIN?

Competitive Curler’s Knee Pain Relieved with Shockwave Therapy

- One of Canada’s Most Experienced Shockwave Therapists. Glenmore Chiropractic DR. RYAN HARRIS

Whether you are an athlete, in your golden years of retirement, or the typical person on your feet all day at work, you know there’s nothing more debilitating than a knee injury. Since 2008, I have been using Shockwave Therapy (ESWT) to treat musculoskeletal (joint and muscle) injuries, including injuries affecting the knee. Shockwave Therapy can be very successful in restoring knee function because Shockwave Therapy breaks down scar tissue and stimulates blood vessel growth to restore muscle function and promote healing. Here is just one inspirational testimonial from one of my patients:

I have been curling competitively since I was 13 years old - that was 40 years ago. Curling is a sport that is very hard on legs and, in particular, knees. Most curlers persevere with a lot of Advil and various muscle ointments. But over time the wear and tear of our sport takes a toll.

While I still loved to compete out on the ice, my knees were suffering and every game was painful. I had tried everything - massage therapy, physio, acupuncture, medication. Nothing worked. It was to the point where I couldn’t see any alternative than to retire from the sport I loved.

I saw an ad for Shockwave Therapy at Glenmore Chiropractic and felt it was worth a shot. I was extremely sceptical but it was my last opportunity to continue curling.

After 6 treatments, I was thrilled that I could curl without pain. A year later, I am still playing and competing without knee pain or strain. I barely even need Advil to get me through.

The real testament to how well Shockwave worked for me came recently when my team qualified to compete at Senior Provincial Playdowns. We went undefeated in a 7 game round robin and won the Championship game. I could not have dreamt of achieving this goal if I hadn’t received Shockwave Therapy from Dr. Harris and the staff at Glenmore Chiropractic.

Life is so much better since I received Shockwave Therapy. I can go for walks, golf, play tennis-pain free. Most importantly, even now that I’m in my 50’s, I can compete in the sport I love and represent BC at the Canadian National Championships.

Thank you to Dr. Harris and his staff!!

-Dawn E., Kelowna Knee injuries have many faces and causes. Tendon injuries are the most common: Iliotibial band syndrome (pain on the outside of the knee); Patellar tendonitis (pain below the knee); and hamstring injuries (leading to pain in the back of the knee). As well, arthritis plagues many people and often results in knee replacement surgery. Unfortunately, many knee surgery patients (due to ligament or cartilage tears) frequent our office. Each of these injuries comes with its own set of obstacles when treating with conventional methods: tendonitis can create fibrous adhesions and scar tissue that disrupts the normal function of the muscle; arthritis erodes the cartilage, decreasing the joint space; and surgery, although sometimes necessary, creates scar tissue on the surrounding muscle and tendon, binding the knee and often creating soft tissue pain.

Shockwave Therapy can be very successful in restoring knee function and alleviating pain primarily because Shockwave Therapy-unlike most other therapies-is able to break down scar tissue; this stimulates blood vessel growth which restores muscle function and ultimately promotes healing. There is much evidence to support the effectiveness of Shockwave Therapy. The Journal of Surgical Research showed ESWT is effective in preventing knee arthritis. In The American Journal of Sports Medicine, 90% of patients treated with ESWT showed significant improvement in patellar tendonitis. Furthermore, The Archives of Orthopedic Trauma Surgery showed significant reduction in the progression of knee arthritis (ESWT stimulates cells to produce cartilage). Results are often experienced within a couple of visits and the treatment is covered by many insurance companies. Call 250-763-3580 to book a FREE consultation.
