Rent cuts could help local arts groups
Rental rates for the Kelowna Community Theatre could be reduced temporarily to help arts and culture groups recover from the financial effects of the COVID19 pandemic.
City council will consider a staff proposal on Monday for a new fee schedule to take effect when live performances can resume at the downtown theatre.
The creative sector has been severely impacted by the COVID19 pandemic, and in particular the live performance industry," reads part of a staff report to council.
"Offering a temporary fee adjustment will open opportunities for artists and non-profit organizations to progressively and safely return to activity at the KCT, while working together to rebuild audiences," staff say.
A non-profit group that booked the theatre under the existing rate would have paid $800 in rental charges. The proposed reduced rate would be $409.
The eventual re-opening of the KCT for live shows, when public health orders allow, would allow for an initial maximum of 50 spectators in the 853-seat theatre.
