Trump action after Jan. 6 most telling

- S. I. Petersen, Nanaimo

DEAR EDITOR:

One of the things that seems to have been overlooked during the impeachment hearings is Trump’s behaviour after the mob stormed the Capitol and tried to take over the U.S. government. Here were people yelling to kill Nancy Pelosi and hang Mike Pence. They even built a gallows. Trump watched all this on TV, but the commander-inchief did nothing to restore order.

With Nixon, the catchphrase was “What did he know and when did he know it?” With Trump, it should be, “What did he do and when did he do it?” In other words, when he saw the insurrection unfolding on TV, who did he call? What were his instructions? At what time did he take action?

When a mob is calling for the killing of the speaker of the house and the hanging of the vice-president, the commander-in-chief should have acted to restore order, regardless of who incited the mob.

This failure to act should be a core tenet of the impeachment trial.
