I have been part of Kelowna since 1972, and even though I have lived in other countries, Kelowna has always been a part of my heart, which makes preserving of its heritage and the legacy family stories particularly important to me. I was brought up around these families and went to school with their children’s children.

As I get more involved with my city, I want to know more about the local heritage society and its preservation efforts, which is why I got excited when I read the proclamation of National Heritage Week happening Feb. 15-21. You too may read this proclamation, which is on the website at okheritagesociety.com and signed by Mayor Colin Basran.

Heritage Week events include the Central Okanagan Society’s Heritage Awards, held this year via Zoom on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. This one-hour event requires registration, which you will also find on the website.

While browsing the site, allow yourself some time to read about the significance of heritage preservation and allow nostalgia to play on your heartstrings a little.

Every year when Valentine’s Day comes around, we examine the works of poets, songwriters and storytellers alike, who dissect and describe the emotion of love.

There are eight types of Love according to the Ancient Greeks: agape — unconditional love; philautia — self-love; storge — familiar love; pragma — enduring love; mania —obsessive love; philia — affectionate love,; ludus — playful love; and eros — romantic love. Like the Greeks, we too are fascinated by love and celebrate its meanings by gestures and events.

Happy Valentine’s Day everyone.
