Kelowna will bid on hosting the 2026 B.C. Summer Games.

City councillors on Monday authorized the bid, saying the event would have a significant sporting and economic impact on Kelowna.

"I think it's excellent. I'm really excited about it, and I have no doubt that we're going to get it," said Coun. Maxine DeHart.

City officials estimate the potential economic benefit of hosting the Games at more than $2 million, made up mostly of spending on accommodations and meals by those who would come to Kelowna for the event.

The B.C. Summer Games were last held in Kelowna in 2008. It generated a surplus of $66,000 that was put toward various recreational projects.

Municipalities interested in staging the Games have until Feb. 19 to submit a bid, with the winning community to be named this fall.

The host community is expected to provide at least $110,000 toward the Games, split equally between cash and the provision of municipal services and facilities, with the B.C. Games Society providing $625,000.
