“Movie: Miss Juneteenth”

Writer-director Channing Godfrey Peoples made a striking feature film debut with this 2020 drama, which casts Nicole Beharie (“42”) as single mother Turquoise Jones, former winner of the local Miss Juneteenth pageant. Since that event offers full college scholarships to the winners, she enters her 15-year-old daughter, Kai (Alexis Chikaeze) into this year’s competition, a development Kai receives with no enthusiasm whatsoever.
