Mask policy is no policy unless it’s enforced

- DEAR EDITOR: Mark Buehler, Kelowna

On Saturday, I visited a local supermarket. I saw a man picking up various fruits on the display as you enter the store. He did not have a mask or shield. He was no more than six feet from the security guy and three other employees. This struck me as odd and so I asked the security guard employed there, why the mandatory mask policy, displayed on their entrance, wasn’t being enforced.

He said: “Management will not let us enforce the mask policy. We can offer a mask, but if refused we are not to take further action.” I guess the owners either doesn’t believe the COVID-19 threat is real or doesn’t care.

Doesn’t care about their staff; doesn’t care about their shoppers; doesn’t care about the plight of first responders.

In light of the other businesses we have read about lately, who do enforce this mandate, at the detriment of their livelihood, this lack of public health enforcement is irresponsible and cowardly.

Shailene Woodley confirmed that she’s engaged to Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

The actor discussed her relationship with Rodgers on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” on Monday, saying they got engaged “a while ago.” The 37-year-old Rodgers mentioned his engagement and thanked his fiancee while accepting his third career MVP award on Feb. 6 but didn’t say her name.

“Yes, we are engaged,” Woodley said. “We are engaged. But for us, it’s not new news, you know, so it’s kind of funny. Everybody right now is freaking out over it and we’re like, ‘Yeah, we’ve been engaged for a while.”‘

Rodgers was announced last month as a celebrity guest host for the longrunning game show. Longtime “Jeopardy!” host Alex Trebek died of cancer on Nov. 8. Rodgers’ guest hosting stint begins April 5.

Woodley, 29, was talking to Fallon on Monday to promote her movie “The Mauritanian.” Her previous credits include the HBO series “Big Little Lies,” “The Fault In Our Stars” and “Divergent.”
