Walk for Alzheimer’s
The IG Wealth Management Walk for Alzheimer’s is on now. People are encouraged to walk on their own throughout the month of May, before joining an online celebration on Sunday, May 30.
In non-COVID times, the Alzheimer’s walk is held in one location in May. During the pandemic, people are encouraged to fundraise and do a walk on their own or with people in their bubble. To register and start fundraising, visit walkforalzheimers.ca.
The walk still has its honoree of the year. This year, it’s past walk chairman Guy Bird and his wife, Maureen Bird. Guy shares his perspective below:
The event includes an online auction for items donated by local businesses. Go to alzbc.org/auction. Running until noon on May 31. Auction includes a hockey stick signed by Vancouver Canucks captain Bo Horvat, hotel stays, winery tours and more.
Funds raised for the Kelowna Walk will support local Alzheimer Society of B.C. programs and services, and help enable research into the causes of and the cure for the disease.
There’s still time to register and join in. Visit walkforalzheimers.ca. Set up your own fundraising page and ask people to donate.
“We are so grateful to everyone who has registered for the walk so far, and are impressed by the adaptability and innovation they have displayed when it comes to supporting British Columbians on the dementia journey,” says Cathryn France, director of resource development at the Alzheimer Society of BC.
“The funds they raise are instrumental to ensuring that people affected by dementia have the tools to live their best life possible. With dementia numbers rising, more supports are needed, and we urge all residents of Kelowna and other Okanagan communities to consider taking part in this event.”
For every $100 people raise up to 11:59 p.m. on May 30, they will receive one entry in a draw to win a $1,000 Visa gift card.
