TOP 10 MOVIES

- BY JAY BOBBIN

“Downton Abbey” (2019):

Expectedly, Smith masterfully reprised her public-television role as Violet Crawley in this first movie spinoff of the internationally popular series.

“Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” (2001): Professor Minerva McGonagall was embodied for the first time by Smith, who would reprise the part in most of the subsequent chapters, in this J.K. Rowling fantasy.

“Gosford Park” (2001): Smith worked with future “Downton Abbey” creator Julian Fellowes on director Robert Altman’s comedy-drama about a very eventful weekend for the guests at an English country house.

“Sister Act” (1992): One of

Smith’s biggest box-office hits was this comedy casting her as the Reverend Mother of a convent where a fugitive from the Mob (Whoopi Goldberg) hid.

“A Room With a View” (1985): Smith had a solid role as the chaperone of a newly smitten cousin (Helena Bonham Carter) in the much-acclaimed Merchant-Ivory version of E.M. Forster’s story.

“California Suite” (1978): Ironically, for the screen version of Neil Simon’s play, Smith’s second Oscar came to her for playing ... an Oscar nominee.

“Murder by Death” (1976): Written by Neil Simon, this mystery satire offered choice roles to David Niven and Smith as Dick and Dora Charleston, obvious parodies of “The Thin Man’s” married sleuths Nick and

Nora Charles.

“Travels With My Aunt” (1972):

With echoes of “Auntie Mame,” this comedy featured Smith as the high-spirited and well-traveled aunt, with her then-husband Robert Stephens also in the cast.

“The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie” (1969): Smith earned her first Oscar as a teacher whose methods of inspiring her private-school students worried others.

“The V.I.P.s” (1963): In one of her earliest film roles, Smith was a standout among an all-star cast as a secretary in love with her boss (Rod Taylor), a businessman struggling to keep his company afloat.
