Right song, right occasion, wrong singer

Whoever asked Rod Stewart to sing Sweet Caroline at the Queen’s Jubilee concert should be fired.

That’s a Neil Diamond song!

Why not invite the real Diamond to sign it and let Rod do any of his two dozen songs that hit the top-10?

If Neil wasn’t available, I’m certain they could find any drunken bloke in a London pub to sing Sweet Caroline.

Keyboard warriors panned Rod’s performance. Give the guy a break, he’s never recorded Sweet Caroline and he was coming off a TransAtlantic flight and a bout of COVID.

Rod’s set consisted of two songs, the other being Baby Jane, a No. 1 hit in the U.K., but hardly his signature song. When I hear Baby Jane, I can’t help but remember Bette Davis serving a rat to Joan Crawford. Eww!

The perfect two-song Jubilee set for Rod Stewart would have been Forever Young and Maggie Mae.

Here’s a cool stat. Houston Astros starter Luis Garcia and reliever Phil Maton each recorded a three-strikeout inning on nine pitches when Houston beat Texas 9-2, Wednesday. It was the first time in MLB history to have two immaculate innings in the same game — either both by one team, or each team recording one.

It’s not often you live a dream, but it has happened.

I’ve been invited to be among the “celebrities” (for lack of a better word) who will be in the dunk tank at the Father’s Day Fun event for Discovery House, Sunday. Pledges will be taken in advance. So, if you hate me, please consider making a donation. Rumour has it there will be a piranha swimming in the tank.

Not to be confused with another fundraiser that I’m presently involved with, if you’d like to offer a donation in my name to Discovery House, please drop it off today at The Herald (186 Nanaimo Ave. W.) or better still, come by Skaha Lake Park on Sunday around 1 p.m.

Penticton could be divided on Main Street and be part of two federal electoral areas, something that’s almost as silly as inviting Rod Stewart to sing Sweet Caroline.

The federal electoral district redistribution commission is presently touring B.C. as our province will have one more MP by the next election. Leave Penticton alone!

The South Okanagan riding should take Summerland from Dan Albas’s present riding of Central OkanaganSimilkameen-Nicola. Take Trail and Castlegar from the South Okanagan and move them to the East Kootenay riding, which makes geographical, political and cultural sense.

Next, add Silverton, New Denver, Nakusp and Arrow Lakes to the North Okanagan riding. The new riding for B.C. should be in the KelownaLake County area, one of the fastestgrowing regions in the province.

It doesn’t need to be the perfect number of people in each riding — geography and common sense should mean much more.

My five favourite solo albums by members of The Beatles: 1. Tug of War (Paul McCartney, 1982); 2. Ringo (Ringo Starr, 1973); 3. Band on the Run (Paul McCartney and Wings, 1973); 4. Imagine (John Lennon, 1971); 5. All Things Must Pass (George Harrison, 1970).

Happy Father’s Day to all the awesome dads out there, including mine.
