Book title: A Good Marriage Author: Kimberly McCreight

If you're anything like me, there's nothing you enjoy more than curling up with a hot cup of tea, a cosy blanket and a book chock full of murder, secrets and lies. A Good Marriage by Kimberly McCreight fulfils all of those requirements.

Lizzie Kitsakis is working as a defence attorney at an elite law firm when she gets a call from an old friend, Zach Grayson. He's in shock that his wife, Amanda, has been murdered. Zach knows he is the primary suspect and is desperate for Lizzie's help.

As Lizzie tries to find out what really happened to Amanda, she is drawn into the secrets and lies of the married couples living in elite Park Slope. And, facing troubles in her own relationship, she finds herself wondering, what makes a good marriage?

Part legal thriller, part domestic thriller, A Good Marriage checks all of the right boxes for someone looking for a suspenseful tale full of twists and turns of murder and marriage. The story unfolds in three ways: in the current timeline, the days leading up to the murder and through grand jury interviews postmurder with side characters. I thoroughly enjoyed the way the plot played out from multiple angles. It consistently led me to think I knew who the killer was. Spoiler: I never did.

I also loved the characters in A Good Marriage. I sympathized with almost everyone and also believed — at one point or another — that each person I met was responsible for Amanda's death. For me, this is an example of excellent writing: when you can both think that someone is guilty and empathize with them at the same time.

If you're a fan of thrilling page turners that are full of jaw-dropping twists and emotional bombshells, check out A Good Marriage from your local library.
