10 month sen­tence for man charged in crime spree

A man in­volved with two oth­ers in a crime spree in Novem­ber of last year was sen­tenced to 10 months in jail.

Ben­jamin Olivier ap­peared via closed cir­cuit tele­vi­sion on Fri­day, March 10. He pleaded guilty to a num­ber of prop­erty re­lated charges stem­ming from in­ci­dents last fall.

On Novem­ber 15 of last year, a pick-up truck was stolen from in front of a res­i­dence around 7:30 in the morn­ing. At about 7:15 that evening the un­cle of the owner of the pick-up saw the truck driv­ing to­ward the high school. He at­tempted to box in the driver, how­ever, the truck evaded him. Ear­lier that day, at about 11 a.m., Olivier was ob­served at Wal-Mart and had stolen sev­eral pairs of shoes. Some­one rec­og­nized the truck in the park­ing lot and called the po­lice. RCMP tried to stop him, but the truck fled on the wrong side of the high­way, driv­ing in and out of the ditch, ex­ceed­ing the speed limit.

The next day po­lice learned that Olivier was stay­ing in a lo­cal ho­tel. He was ap­pre­hended and when they searched the room, they dis­cov­ered many stolen items in­clud­ing tools and a com­pres­sor.

Olivier has been in­car­cer­ated since the day for a to­tal of 115 days. The crown and de­fense agreed on a joint sub­mis­sion, sen­tenc­ing Olivier glob­ally to 300 days. He was given credit for 172 days spent in cus­tody await­ing res­o­lu­tion. He was also given 12 months of pro­ba­tion.

On Novem­ber 25 of last year, Terry Hep­ton­stall was sen­tenced for his role in the spree. Also ac­cused is Jamie Olivier, She has yet to re­solve her charges.
