Verdant Valley Eye Opener
What a week of celebrations!! Last Saturday, June 2 Celeste Poland and Lucas Hernandez were married in Calgary and held their reception and dance at the Verdant Valley Community Center. Celeste is the daughter of Marcia Poland and granddaughter of Larry Wayne Poland. Congratulations and best wishes to the young couple.
This week was spring convocation at the University of Alberta in Edmonton. On Thursday, June 7, 2018, Deana Nicole Thom of Brooks, daughter of Donna (Shadlock) Thom and granddaughter of Fred and Gerri Shadlock, graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biological Sciences with a Psychology minor. Well done Deana. Congratulations and best wishes for your future endeavours. Deana also got to share the stage with Dr. David Suzuki when he received an honorary degree from the U of A.
The following day June 8, 2018, Amanda Lynn Hemming Randolph and husband Brock Robert Randolph graduated with one hundred and fifty classmates with a degree in Medicine from the University of Alberta. With Dentistry and Pharmacy students, there were about 500 students receiving degrees that day. The day before the graduation the medical students received scholarship awards. Amanda was awarded the Swarn Parmar prize in Geriatrics for excellence in geriatric medicine and care for the elderly. Brock was one of four students to receive the EW Keider Memorial Prize in Surgery. Congratulations and best wishes Dr. Amanda and Dr. Brock Randolph who will begin their residency in Edmonton and rural Edmonton on July 1. It takes 21 years of schooling to become a doctor. A big commitment.
Clint and Lynn Hemming and Ron and Helen Leonhardt were in Edmonton for the convocation of Amanda and Brock. Ron and I had a busy weekend going on Thursday evening to an awards night for granddaughter Justine Schultz who is graduating from Victoria Composite High School next weekend. Justine won highest marks in English 30-1. On Friday we attended the convocation ceremonies at the Jubilee Auditorium and then visits at the homes of Amanda and Brock Randolph and Ashley and Kyle Green. On Saturday we visited at the home of grandson Michael and Kelsie Leonhardt west of Spruce Grove. Saturday evening we, along with Lynn and Clint, attended the banquet for the graduating class at the Shaw Convention Center. What a happy and fun weekend for us.
Monday, June 4 the Drumheller and District 4H Beef Show and Sale was held in Delia. Young people from our community taking part were Camryn, Connor, Delaney and Elli-Anna McDougald. Camryn had the reserve club champion steer for the Delia Club and Delaney had the champion cow/calf pair for the Delia Club. Well done girls. Cadynce, Meah and Vanessa Richmond daughters of Ron’s nephew Ken Richmond were members of the Rumsey-Rowley Club. Meah won reserve club champion and Vanessa showed the grand champion female of the whole show. In interclub competition Delaney McDougald won first in intermediate showmanship, Elli-Anna McDougald won reserve in junior showmanship and Cadynce Richmond won reserve in junior grooming. The Rumsey-Rowley Club won best pen of three. Congratulations everyone who raised and showed a calf or cow/calf pair. You have done a great job. Also a vote of congratulations to parents and leaders for the work done in the 4H clubs.
