Verdant Valley Eye Opener
On Saturday October 27 we paid our last respects to a beloved teacher and 25 year member of our community. Oswald Orthner was grade 5 - 8 teacher and principal of the Verdant Valley School from 1960 to 1985 and taught nearly everyone in our community or their children. It was the first and only school he taught and we all have fond memories of him flooding the skating rink, shoveling snow so kids could skate, putting on Christmas concerts and working at the Verdant Valley turkey suppers. He was always ready to give a helping hand. “Mr. Orthner” passed away on Sunday, October 21, 2018 at the age of 96 years. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Ethel, and children Elaine (Darren) Lewis of Victoria BC; Marlene (David) Joachim of Lethbridge; Collin (Laura Lee) Orthner of Red Deer and Brad (Allison) Orthner of Calgary and seven grandchildren. Jim and Toni Wilson, Ron and Helen Leonhardt , Judy (McKee) Ginn and Keith McKee attended funeral services in Calgary to celebrate the life of service and dedication of this special man and friend.
The Annual General Meeting of the Verdant Valley Ag Society will be held on Tuesday, November 20, 2018 at the Verdant Valley Community Center at 7:00 p.m.

It seems like everyone in our community is finished with the harvest but some areas still have quite a bit of combining to do yet. Hope this fall weather holds for harvest and Halloween.
