The lovely spring–like weather has prompted many motor bikers to make the most of the opportunities available. The previous Sunday, Blaine and Crystal Ferguson took a bike ride to Big Valley to visit her uncle and aunt. Donald and Sheri Mueller made a circle tour of the Knee Hill county on Saturday and Nathan Bell has been seen making quick evening tours around the area.
Along with spring weather comes yard work, and on Wednesday there was a grass cutting bee at the Orkney Community Centre. A number of the neighbours got the grounds looking good before doing a bit of socializing. While they were enjoying the get-together they did some planning for the Orkney sports day. The annual sports day is scheduled for June 15 at the Community Centre. Burgers will be barbecued and people are asked to bring a salad, and also a pie for dessert.
On Saturday Sino and Tabi Krazaic held a celebration barbecue for their daughter, Paula’s, graduation. The Krazaic family came to Canada 10 years ago from Croatia and settled in the Orkney district so Sino could work in the area. Their children, Paula and Noemi, spoke no English at all, but started school in Three Hills in grades 3 and 4, respectively. The girls quickly learned the language and have done very well in school. They have since moved to Calgary but have kept up with friends in Orkney. Vildana and Ramos Kazic, owners of the Rolling Hills Country Resort just off highway 27, and their son, Alver, attended the graduation celebration, as did Les, Cathy, Nathan and Kirsti Bell.
On Sunday, Rev. Tom Brownlee, a regular minister at the Orkney Presbyterian Church, officiated for the first time in a while. He had just returned earlier in the week from 6 weeks of travelling. He and a number of family members toured South Africa, where his wife, Moira, is from. They also
made a stop in Amsterdam on the way home. He had some fascinating tales to tell.
Jans and Pat Kaack were travelling westward after a Danish Federation conference in Winnipeg, and stopped at their cabin by the coulee. They attended church service at the Orkney church on Sunday before heading home to Calgary. They, too, shared their intriguing travel stories.
Wanda Moar appreciated a bit of a break and a change of pace in Rocky Mountain House as she spent the weekend there, cat sitting. She enjoyed the scenery and the opportunity to scope out the interesting markets in the area.
Celebrating birthdays in the month of June are Brad Sorensen on June 3, Alyse McGhee on June 6 and Donald Mueller on June 13.
