It is with great interest I have been following the development of two owlets whose home is in a spruce tree beside my driveway. The location of the nest had been a mystery for some time but once discovered and the youngsters revealed a daily visit has been included in my routine. The chicks do not appear to be as interested in me as I am in them and they tolerate my intrusions with casual disregard. Unlike some species which do not begin incubating their eggs until the entire clutch has been laid, the Great Horned Owl, like other owls, starts “setting” immediately so one baby gets a head start on the other. This week one is beginning to show its feathers while the other is still covered in down.

It is worthwhile to become familiar with the county website and I learned, although too late to be included in last week’s column, on the homepage you may click on “All the latest news & events from Wheatland County” to learn of events such as the land owners information meeting which was held at the Dalum Community Hall on Tuesday evening. The meeting pertained to reconstruction of Township Road 264 and I will include information regarding the meeting and that project next week. To view the county website go to www.wheatlandcounty.ca.
The flooring upgrade for the community hall entry has been completed and the next proposed project is the installation of an air conditioning system for the basement. Two options are being considered and the most appropriate in regard to cost and effectiveness will be chosen. Meanwhile the installation of playground equipment is still in the planning stage.
It seems I have been including several news items from the Delia area lately and this week I will mention the 4H lamb show and sale which was included with the recent 4H Beef show and sale held at the Delia arena. Our family had been active in the Dinosaur Valley 4H Lamb Club which offered the 4H experience to many children from Dalum and other communities in the Drumheller area until it ceased
