Learning the basics of flag football
Elementary school students at St. Anthony’s School are learning the fundamentals of the gridiron playing in after school flag football.
On Tuesdays after school they are on the field or in the gym, depending on the weather, playing flag football. Athletic director Gavin Makse says the program is free for students and they have received a grant from JumpStart, a Canadian Tire charity, for equipment.
He explains they spend the first half of the weekly session on drills, and then the remaining time playing the game. The program utilizes the high school recreation leadership students who take an active role in the program. They help to coach teach and referee. The students are divided up into four teams.
Makse says the program gives the students the fundamentals of the game.
“It’s great, we teach everyone all the positions, it’s safe, it’s quick, and there is no cost,” said Makse. “The biggest thing is everyone can play.”
