Dragons split on weekend road trip
The Dragons headed north for a road trip armed with a new slate of goaltenders for the weekend.
The Dagons shuffled their line-up last week before heading north to play Drayton Valley and Spruce Grove.
The Dragons dealt goaltender Cale Elder to the Kindersley Klippers of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League for future considerations. He suited up for 10 games with the Dragons this season.
The Dragons also picked up Colin Ahern from the Soo Thunderbirds from Sault Ste. Marie of the Northern Ontario Hockey Junior League. The Wisconsin native left the Thunderbirds with a 2.59 GGA and a .915 SV%.
The Dragons also saw the reassignment of goaltender Brett Balas to the Dragons from the Spokane Chiefs of the
Balas got the start on Friday, November 8 when the Dragons took on the Spruce Grove Saints.
The Dragons started strong with Kasey Hiemstra opening the scoring shorthanded. Four minutes later Carter Belitski scored, putting the Dragons up filephoto
2-0 in the first period. Spruce Grove answered back eight minutes into the second period, but Scout Truman added to the Dragons’ lead.
In the third period, Derrick Budz put the Dragons up 4-1. The Saints made it a little closer, but Eric Martin scored on the empty net to make it 5-2 and out of reach. Balas stopped 29 shots.
On Saturday, November 9, the Dragons were in Drayton Valley to take on the Thunder. This time they started Ahern between the posts.
This time the Thunder struck first, and were up 2-0 before Brady Risk scored 2:25 into the second period, the Dragons tied it in the third with a powerplay goal from Hiemstra, but the Drayton Valley Thunder went up 3-2 at the 7:42 mark. Thunder scored an empty-net goal to put it out of reach. Ahern stopped 28 shots.
On Tuesday, November 12, the Dragons hosted the Canmore Eagles, results not available at press time.
