Eagles are again junior basketball champions
The St. John’s College Green Eagles played scrappy defence and found their shooting touch to win the Brant County junior high school girls’ championship on Friday.
The Green Eagles defeated the Brantford Collegiate Mustangs 63-40 in Game 3 of their best-ofthree series.
“We were a little upset with how we played last night,” said Lauren Marcos of the Green Eagles 35-32 loss on Thursday in Game 2. “But we’re a team of warriors and we showed it tonight.
“Our defence was flawless and our shooting was amazing.”
Marcos finished Game 3 with 31 points and led all scorers with a terrific performance.
In the first quarter, the Green Eagles took the lead with a tenacious full-court press, which forced a lot of turnovers which they converted to points. The three-point shooting which helped them with game one but disappeared in game two came back in the opening quarter of game three.
Marcos scored 15 points in the first quarter, including nine from three-point range to help the Green Eagles take an early lead. Lauren Overeem and Reilly Taylor each scored five in the first quarter to give the Green Eagles a 23-11.
However, in the second quarter the Mustangs fared better, scoring 10 points to six for the Green Eagles. The Mustangs were led by Kaia Grant who scored five points in the quarter on top of the four points she scored in the first quarter.
The Green Eagles found their touch again in the third quarter when Marcos score 13 points, including six from three-point range. Taylor scored eight points in the third, including six from beyond the three-point line.
At the end of three quarters, the Green Eagles led 53- 34.
Taylor finished the game with 18 points.
By the time the fourth quarter started the game was pretty much over and the Green Eagles cruised to their second consecutive championship.

The Green Eagles advance to Central Western Ontario Secondary Schools Association tournament, which will be played in Kitchener starting Friday.
