Two sides to every argument

Re: Trudeau and Trump will survive 2019 -- barely (Jan. 9)

In his column, Andrew Cohen sinks his right-wing bashing to new low, characterziing two prominent Conservative leaders as buffoonish and dull,

His claim that Justin Trudeau has “accomplishments” is arguable.

Let’s see:

• Legalized cannabis — the jury is still out on that one, with the Liberals rushing through legislation and pushing costs to municipalities, while scooping the lion’s share of taxes.

• Middle-class tax relief — the Trudeau government reduced the second-lowest personal income tax rate to 20.5 per cent from 22 per cent. However, at the same time, tax credits for children’s fitness, education, textbooks and public were eliminated. As a result, many Canadians are paying higher taxes.

• Trudeau spent billions on infrastructure — the federal government has little to show for what has been spent on infrastructure projects. according to its own figures. The parliamentary budget officer reported that an infrastructure plan “does not exist.”

• Opened a dialogue with Indigenous Peoples — Well, Trudeau has but, to date, there has been no meaningful action.

• Saved NAFTA — Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland Freeland made concessions to the U.S. and still has not resolved the crippling aluminum and steel tariffs.

• Unemployment is the lowest in a generation — by increasing public service employees. Does that really help?

If Mr. Cohen really believes these are accomplishments, please let him defend some of Trudeau’s other disasters: the energy file with failed pipelines; privacy breaches; ethics indictment; Phoenix Pay system failure, illegal immigration, huge deficits and damaged international affairs with his embarrassing India trip.

I could go on but acknowledging there are two sides to every argument is a valid point. Garry Goold Brantford
