Jewellery Factory a rarity

A Q & A with Jonathan Allison, of the Jewellery Factory and Aberdeen Gift, two family-owned retail stores located in South Lancaster.

What type of products do you sell? The Jewellery Factory is a full-service jeweller, something that is quite rare in the industry these days. With a staff of experts within the industry, we are able to create anything you can imagine, your budget being the only constraint. Our work ranges from routine maintenance to preserve jewellery, repairs of all sorts to restore jewellery, and the ability to create completely custom one-of-akind items. If you can imagine it, we can do it. Our expert staff has even created jewellery for celebrities.

Aberdeen is a natural complement to our jewellery store and allows our customers to enjoy one stop shopping. Aberdeen is a beautiful store with unique and hard to find gourmet items, great gifts for all occasions, as well as a wide variety of beautiful home decor items for all seasons. Aberdeen also offers a wide selection of leading brand names within a variety of categories including: Yankee Candle, Crabtree & Evelyn, Michel Design, Wildly Delicious, and much, much, more.

Is online shopping an issue? It's somewhat ironic, however online shopping, as well as shopping by TV, actually help our business. Jewellery purchased online is more likely to come in for repair, bringing us new customers who discover our store. Jewellery is a tactile item and quality assessments are best made when you can see and feel an item from all angles, not just the angle that an item photographs best from. Our customers can also try items on and discuss any questions they might have with a knowledgeable expert who has a lifetime of experience to share. We also have a vested interest in ensuring every customer leaves, and stays, happy. Our customers trust our reputation and take comfort knowing that we stand behind everything we offer, period. Have consumers’ tastes changed over the years? Definitely. Rose gold continues to grow in popularity, whether it's an item that's entirely rose gold or an item with rose gold accents. Gemstone engagement rings are definitely something that are growing in popularity, perhaps influenced in part from royal Kate Middleton's gemstone engagement ring. Also customers from all over the world are coming to realize we are incredibly lucky to have access to Canadian diamonds.

Why should people shop locally? Shopping locally is directly connected with building our community and is likely the most powerful means we have of expressing our personal values and beliefs. Our stores, Aberdeen and The Jewellery Factory, support countless local charities, fundraisers, organizations, and events each year. Most of these activities are not publicized.

Shopping locally is also a virtuous circle insofar as it supports those employed within the community, who then go one to support others within the community. Shopping locally also helps to build a sense of connection and pride within our community.
