There wouldn’t be a Santa Claus if it weren’t for Sinterklaas.

Sinterklaas and Santa are basically the same character. Santa originally was Sinterklaas at first but evolved into a closely related but altogether completely different character.

Sinterklaas is the patron saint of Amsterdam, of sailors and children.

In late November a few weeks before his actual birthday, the good man sails in from Spain by boat with his horse Amerigo as well as his helpers, the “Pieten.”

Up until his birthday on December 6, children leave their shoes by the fireplace and fill them with carrots and hay for the horse. Chocolates or little presents can be found the next morning unless the child has been naughty, in which case he or she receives a note saying that if he or she does not clean up his/her act, there will be no gifts and even worse, the name will be put in the naughty book.

This year, Sinterklaas will make a very special appearance December 3 at Dutch Touch Groceries. If you would like your child to have a one-on-one visit with Sinterklaas, please contact Jackie at 613-525-4054, or e-mail dutchtouchgroceries@hot
