$65,000 for Organic Growers
Canadian Organic Growers has launched its new Organic Success Program thanks to a $65,100 grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation that will allow 25 producers to learn what it takes to develop a successful organic farming operation.
The 12-month pilot program will offer support to Ontario farmers who are considering going through the organic certification process. Canadian Organic Growers is offering farmers the chance to see what organic certification is all about with on-farm tours, workshops, and mock farm inspections. Experienced organic farmers will share their knowledge on organic records keeping, interpreting the organic standards, and planning an organic operation. At the end of the year, participants will have gained valuable insights and hands-on tools to use in the transition of their own farm to organic production.
“Consumers in Canada and worldwide are increasingly choosing organic produce, and Ontario’s agri-food industry is excellently positioned to meet the challenge of the growing organic demand. Our farm workforce is skilled, productive, and innovative,” says Jim McDonell, MPP for StormontDundas-South Glengarry.
“The Organic Success Program will contribute to helping farmers transition to organic methods and secure a reliable supply of Ontariogrown, quality organic produce. I am pleased to see the Ontario Trillium Foundation recognize the existing progress made by Ontario’s organic growers and the potential for future development in the industry. I wish Canadian Organic Growers continued successes and growth in the years to come,” adds the MPP who attended the launch that coincided with Eco Farm Day in Cornwall.
“Certified organic farming is relatively new,” said Rachael Muller, Organic Success Program Manager, “and there are lots of misconceptions in farmers’ minds. The Ontario Trillium Foundation’s grant will help our program participants get past those myths and
navigate their way to certification one step at a time.”
