Businesses throughout the region will be participating in Black Friday promotional campaigns November 23.

For example, a large group of business people in Vankleek Hill has pooled resources to coordinate Black Friday specials, with many stores remaining open later than usual Friday night.

Black Friday has been observed in the United States for decades, but in recent years, the trend has moved north.

Black Friday is the informal name for the day following Thanksgiving Day in the United States, the fourth Thursday of November, which has been regarded as the beginning of the country's Christmas shopping season.

The custom dates back to the 1950s, although the term “Black Friday” did not become widely used until the early 2000s.

It is estimated that one-third of all holiday-related shopping will take place November 23.
