‘Healthy land, people and profits’ theme of Eco Farm Day
Tony McQuail will deliver the keynote speech, “Healthy Land, Healthy People, Healthy Profits,” at Eco Farm Day 2015 February 28 at the Ramada Inn in Cornwall.
The Lucknow farmer is among an impressive list of speakers who will address the conference which begins at 8:30 a.m.
Presented by the Ottawa-St. Lawrence-Outaouais chapter of the Canadian Organic Growers, the 31st Eco Farm Day is “a winter day full of food, friendship and inspiration.” The meeting is a highlight of the season for organic and organic-curious farmers and gardeners in eastern Ontario and western Québec.

In addition to interactive workshops, there will be a feast of local foods and opportunities to check out products and services offered by trade fair exhibitors. The focus is on practical techniques and management skills that work in this area. Workshop topics include beekeeping, pork production, adding breed stock, open pollinated field corn, smallscale organic certification, root cellars, and more, all with an emphasis on sustainable organic stewardship of land, food and fibre. There will be simultaneous translation into French for the keynote address as well as three other sessions throughout the day. Other topics to be covered: -- Precision technology for soil and water quality improvement;

-- Proposed alternative organic certification models for smallscale farmers;
-- Crop rotations, cover crops and weed management in organic field crop management;
-- Organic pasture management to optimize both animal health and farm profits;
-- Incorporating breeding stock as a part of organic pork production;
-- Growing and adapting open pollinated corn varieties for organic farm conditions;
-- Pastured laying hens and ducks, planning for maximum benefit;
-- Growing and marketing organic medicinal herbs in the Outaouais region.
