‘Healthy land, peo­ple and prof­its’ theme of Eco Farm Day

Tony McQuail will de­liver the key­note speech, “Healthy Land, Healthy Peo­ple, Healthy Prof­its,” at Eco Farm Day 2015 Fe­bru­ary 28 at the Ra­mada Inn in Cornwall.

The Lucknow farmer is among an im­pres­sive list of speak­ers who will ad­dress the con­fer­ence which be­gins at 8:30 a.m.

Pre­sented by the Ot­tawa-St. Lawrence-Ou­taouais chap­ter of the Cana­dian Or­ganic Grow­ers, the 31st Eco Farm Day is “a win­ter day full of food, friend­ship and in­spi­ra­tion.” The meet­ing is a high­light of the sea­son for or­ganic and or­ganic-cu­ri­ous farm­ers and gar­den­ers in eastern On­tario and western Québec.

In ad­di­tion to in­ter­ac­tive work­shops, there will be a feast of lo­cal foods and op­por­tu­ni­ties to check out prod­ucts and ser­vices of­fered by trade fair ex­hibitors. The fo­cus is on prac­ti­cal tech­niques and man­age­ment skills that work in this area. Work­shop top­ics in­clude bee­keep­ing, pork pro­duc­tion, adding breed stock, open pol­li­nated field corn, smallscale or­ganic cer­ti­fi­ca­tion, root cel­lars, and more, all with an em­pha­sis on sus­tain­able or­ganic stew­ard­ship of land, food and fi­bre. There will be si­mul­ta­ne­ous trans­la­tion into French for the key­note ad­dress as well as three other ses­sions through­out the day. Other top­ics to be cov­ered: -- Pre­ci­sion tech­nol­ogy for soil and wa­ter qual­ity im­prove­ment;

-- Scal­ing up the mar­ket farm sus­tain­ably;

-- Pro­posed al­ter­na­tive or­ganic cer­ti­fi­ca­tion mod­els for smallscale farm­ers;

-- Crop ro­ta­tions, cover crops and weed man­age­ment in or­ganic field crop man­age­ment;

-- Or­ganic pas­ture man­age­ment to op­ti­mize both an­i­mal health and farm prof­its;

-- In­cor­po­rat­ing breed­ing stock as a part of or­ganic pork pro­duc­tion;

-- Grow­ing and adapt­ing open pol­li­nated corn va­ri­eties for or­ganic farm con­di­tions;

-- Pas­tured lay­ing hens and ducks, plan­ning for max­i­mum ben­e­fit;

-- Grow­ing and mar­ket­ing or­ganic medic­i­nal herbs in the Ou­taouais re­gion.

-- Uses for a sprayer on or­ganic farms;

-- Tech­niques for or­ganic bee­hive man­age­ment.
