Heart­breaker Cup cel­e­brates girls hockey in Glen­garry

BY SEAN BRAY Sports Editor The 6th an­nual Glen­garry Girls Hockey As­so­ci­a­tion home tour­na­ment, known as the Heart­breaker Cup, was held Feb. 6-8 in Alexandria, fea­tur­ing com­pet­i­tive di­vi­sions of play for ban­tam house and mid­get ‘C’ teams, both of which were won by Glen­garry squads.

For the mid­get High­landers, this re­cent ti­tle is part of a suc­cess­ful sea­son in which the girls ear­lier won tour­neys in Belleville and Longueuil, Que.

The Heart­breaker fi­nal pit­ted Glen­garry against the West Lake Wings, with the home side pre­vail­ing 3-1 for the cham­pi­onship.

Glen­garry goals were net­ted Kayla Le­touzel (2) and Josianne Glaude, while earn­ing as­sists were Le­touzel, Glaude, and Jes­sica D'Amour.

Glen­garry’s mid­get girls opened the three-day tour­na­ment with a 3-2 win over Trois Lac Phoenix. Glaude led the charge with a pair of goals, while Le­touzel notched the other.

Pick­ing up ap­ples were Le­touzel (2), Glaude, Leigh McMil­lan, and Emma Des­rosiers-Solowy.

Game two fin­ished up as a 7-0 blank­ing of the Dol­lard Blades. Tay­lor Con­way back­stopped the ef­fort in net.

Glen­garry point-get­ters were Le­touzel (3G), Brooke Seguin (1G, 2A), D'Amour (2A), McMil­lan (1G, 1A), Glaude (1G), Mat­tea Duhart (1G), and Grace Ma­cLach­lan (1A).

The third round-robin match went into the books as a 3-1 vic­tory over the Dol­lard Edges. Glaude paced the ef­fort with a pair of goals, while Seguin counted one. As­sist­ing were Le­touzel and MacKen­zie Van Loon.

In ad­di­tion to the two com­pet­i­tive di­vi­sions, this year’s tour­na­ment fea­tured a pair of ex­hi­bi­tion games be­tween Glen­garry’s pee­wees and the Cornwall Typhoons.

Ban­tams bat­tle

The ban­tam fi­nal came down to a bat­tle be­tween two Glen­garry squads, the #1 and #2 High­landers, with the for­mer tak­ing the ti­tle on a 5-0 shutout back­stopped by goal­tender Emily McDonell who also was in net for a pair of shutout wins in the round robin.

Ac­count­ing for the goals in the fi­nal were Sara Hay (2), Sara Car­riere, Gil­lian Kip­pen, and Danika Longtin. The as­sists went to Mireille Seguin, Hay, Car­riere, and Felic­ity Beug­ger.

The even­tual champs opened their run at the tour­na­ment with a 2-0 ef­fort over the Dun­das Lions. Goals came from Danika De­coeur and Brooke Lapierre, both of whom also had as­sists, in ad­di­tion to one for Longtin.

Game two was a 2-1 win ver­sus the Kanata Rangers, on a pair of tal­lies by Hay. As­sists went to Longtin (2), Lapierre, and Brae­lyn Char­bon­neau.

Their third game saw the High­landers spank the Cornwall Typhoons 6-0. Hay and Car­riere both scores twice, the oth­ers tal­lied by Longtin and Char­bon­neau. Lapierre chalked up four helpers, while Longtin had three, and Car­riere and Seguin each recorded one.

The run to the fi­nal for the # 2 High­landers started with a 5-1 vic­tory ver­sus Cornwall. El­lie MacKin­non had a hat trick for the home squad, with other goals net­ted by Stephanie Leask and Olivia McKen­zie. Earn­ing as­sists were Emma Van­der­Burg (2), So­phie Cor­put (2), Leask, Emma Bac­chioci, Va­lerie Pa­que­tte, and Josee Lau­zon.

Game two: 3-0 win over the Kanata Wolves. Shutout by Re­becca Sabourin. Goals: Van­der­Burg, Leask, and El­lie MacKin­non. As­sists: Cor­put ( 2), Josee Lau­zon, MacKin­non, and McKen­zie.

Game three: 3-1 win against the Kanata Rangers. Goals: Van­der­Burg ( 2) and McKen­zie. As­sists: Bac­chioci (2), Cor­put, and Pa­que­tte.

The ban­tam #1 High­landers fin­ished their reg­u­lar sea­son league play atop the ODWHA stand­ings.

They are sched­uled to be back on the ice Satur­day, Feb. 28 for a noon match against Kemptville #1 in Alexandria.

The ban­tam #2 team fol­lows at 1 p.m. against Dun­das.

Also on Satur­day, the mid­get High­landers will host Kemptville at 2 p.m.

The pee­wees are slated to play Sun­day in Rus­sell.
