Trampoline athletes soar
On the weekend of Jan. 24-25, athletes from the Air Gliders Trampoline Club attended the Second Ontario Cup in Ottawa, providing the kids the opportunity to perform their routines in front of parents, family, and friends as this competition was close to home.
Air Gliders was represented at this competition by six athletes: Audrey Millette – L1 Women age 11-12, Caitlin McInnis and Arianne Pilon – L1 Women age 14, Laura Lebel – L1 Women age 15+, Kasper Furo – L1 Men 13+, and Schuyler Schellenberg – L4 Men.
Schellenberg, the most advanced trampolinist in the club, had a great performance, receiving the second highest score of his level and earning the silver medal.
Audrey Millette also had a very good performance. In just her second experience at a trampoline competition, she earned herself a fourth place ribbon.
A minimum score with attendance at two out of three competitions is required to attend provincial championships. Schellenberg, Millette, and Lebel have achieved that mark to qualify for provincials in April. Furo, Pilon, and McInnis will focus on the upcoming Third Cup in March with a berth at provincials on the line.
“I am very proud of the progress our athletes are showing” says Jean Juneau, head coach for the Air Gliders Trampoline Club. “Aside from Schuyler who has been jumping with us for six years, all of our athletes are in their first year of competition, which is very good.”
The number of competitors in Ontario has seen a significant increase again this year, with over 400 athletes trying their best in various levels of the program. Cornwall’s own Air Gliders Trampoline club has six inspiring athletes who train twice a week at École Secondaire L’Heritage. Young jumpers from Cornwall, Alexandria, Moose Creek, and as far as Mountain have made the choice to engage themselves in training to display their abilities in the various competitions. –
