Football prospects named
Qualifiers for the next round of the Ontario Prospects Challenge have been named. What follows here are the athletes who are products of the Glengarry Gaels football club. Carrying the county banner in the Minors group is Felix Pilon. The Grade 7 team prospects are Camden Barrett and Brandon Urquhart.
Moving on to the next round for the Grade 8 Eastern Ontario squad are Eric Cumberbatch, Patrick Cumberbatch, and Jacob Traynor.
Freshmen (Grade 9) prospects are Maximus Sabourin, Danika Lavigne, and Gabriel Seguin.
Simon Korteweg and Chase McRae will be competing for spots on the final roster of the Sophomore (Grade 10) Eastern Ontario team.
Seniors picked to advance are Alex Zarifi, Cameron Howes, Micheal Bissonnette, and Terry Dogbey.
The athletes, billed as the top 100 at each level, were selected from recent open tryouts. Upcoming workouts will whittle the rosters down to form the final squads that will represent our region in OPC games this spring.
Colts to hold Crusaders night Feb. 4
Cornwall's junior ‘A’ hockey club, the Colts, will honour students from Char-Lan District High School on Thursday, Feb. 4, with Crusaders Night. Student tickets, at a cost of just $5, are available from the school office.
The current team includes a number of students, past and present, and has seen many Crusaders move through its ranks over the years.
Game time on Feb. 4 is set for 7:30 p.m., and the contest will feature the Colts hosting the Pembroke Lumber Kings, at the Cornwall Civic Complex.
The Colts also plan to have some minor hockey Rebels as flag bearers (pre-game) and a novice team playing a scrimmage during the first intermission.
CCHL2 represented at HEO showcase
As part of the Jan. 25 HEO Winter Showcase in Ottawa, a CCHL2 all-star game was played, where the Martin Division 98/99 team fell to the Richardson Division squad 2-1.
Alexandria Glens goaltender Nick Campbell played half the game, allowing one goal against. None of the county contingent (Eric Duguay, Phil Veilleux, Dylan Seguin, Landon Veenstra) picked up points in the loss.
The Martin side's only goal came from Oliver Castleman, who plays for the Casselman Vikings. Richardson markers were notched by Marc Bertrand (Stittsville Royals) and Jacob Steege (Arnprior Packers).
Glens head coach Stephan Nadeau served on the Martin Division bench as an assistant coach.
Lancaster leads ‘4-City Tour’
In senior men’s inter-club curling last week at the Alexandria Curling Club, all four entrants played to split results.
Points to date are as follows: Lancaster 34, Alexandria 28, Vankleek Hill 28, and Maxville 22.
Next round is booked for Feb. 16 at the Glengarry Curling Club in Maxville.
