Gaels junior boys to host basketball league playoffs

The Glengarry News - - Sports in the Glens - St. Lawrence High School is booked to host junior ‘A’ EOSSAA on Feb. 24.

BY SEAN BRAY Sports Editor After a slow start to the season where the GDHS Gaels junior boys dropped their first two SDGAA league basketball games, the squad got it together to reel off the next seven straight, clinching the right to host the playoffs in the process.

As coach Trish Brown explains, the Gaels actually finished second in the standings, just behind St. Lawrence HS. However, the Saints weren’t able to host the playoff tournament, as they are also holding the senior event, so GD got the event instead.

Glengarry’s most recent league win came Feb. 8 on their home court, where the Gaels got past Seaway 53-33.

The SD&G playoff tournament will be a one-day affair, set for Feb. 19 in Alexandria, in the main gym at GDHS.

At 10 a.m., the Gaels will take on the very same Spartans they beat last week. The other semifinal will see St. Lawrence play CCVS at 11:30 a.m. The championship game is booked for a 1:30 p.m. start.

Senior ‘A’ playoffs

Glengarry’s senior squad squeaked into the playoffs in fourth place and will travel to St. Lawrence on Feb. 19 to take on the host Saints at 10 a.m. Char-Lan placed third and is booked to play Heritage at 11:30 a.m.

In the regular season, when the Gaels played St. Lawrence, the Saints won handily 70-19. Char-Lan’s meeting with Heritage during league play also went in favour of their opponents, as the Dragons prevailed 46-28.

The senior final will go at 1:30 p.m.

‘AA’ boys playoffs

Playoff action in the ‘AA’ loop is set for Feb. 18, with junior games at St. Joseph’s and senior matches at Holy Trinity.

At the junior tourney, the 9 a.m. first semifinal will have La Citadelle and the host squad battle, while the second semi at 10:30 a.m. will see CCVS play Holy Trinity. The final is set for a 12:30 p.m. start.

Over at the Falcons’ Nest, the first semifinal will go at 11 a.m. between Holy Trinity and CCVS, with the second semi at 12:30 p.m. featuring La Citadelle and St. Joseph’s. The title tilt is set for 2:30 p.m.

Gaels vs VCI

Last Friday, GDHS teams travelled to Vankleek Hill to play exhibition games against the VCI squads, which compete in the PrescottRussell high school league.

The junior game saw the Gaels prevail 58-37, while in the senior match GD won 44-33.

Daryl Blondin has a trio of three-pointers for the senior Gaels, with the offence otherwise well-distributed. Three players – Alex Zarifi, David MacMaster, and Jacob Steele – each had seven points.

The Rebels, as winners of three of their last four games, remain in contention for the final playoff wildcard spot, but will likely need to win out and hope for some help in order to claim it.

The boys were scheduled to play last night against the Stittsville Royals.
