Gaels serve up volleyball crown
BY SEAN BRAY Sports Editor “I’m still hoping to bring home some more hardware,” says Sara Hay of her Glengarry District High School junior girls volleyball championship.
The Gaels claimed the SD&G crown last week in Cornwall, beating La Citadelle in two sets, on scores of 25-17 and 25-15.
GD entered the SDGAA playoff tournament as the second seed, two points behind the host Patriotes.
However, the girls were on top when it counted, prevailing in the Feb. 18 semifinal and title match.
Hay went on to add that she is very excited by the win, which capped off a great league season of fun.
“I’m really proud of how the girls came together. I’m also really excited to be going to EOSSAA with my team.”
That’s where she and her teammates will be looking for more hardware, as the Gaels play in Deep River today, Feb. 24, at the regional tournament.
Robyn Howes, another of the GD girls, says, “I feel extremely proud of my team for working together and showing commitment towards getting to our goal of going to EOSSAA.”
The Gaels are coached by Wendy Lang, who looks back on the SD&G semifinal as key.
It was the girls’ first time touching a ball in some time, as they had missed practice sessions with back-to-back snow days earlier in the week.
Lang says a bit of rust showed as the Gaels collided with Heritage, but gradually the players got in sync en route to the championship.
For Hay, the team’s success comes down to one thing: “all the talking we do on and off court.”
In the senior ‘A’ playoffs, hosted by Heritage last week, Seaway defeated La Citadelle 25-11 and 25-21 to nab the SD&G title.
The GDHS Gaels, as the sixth seed, lost in the quarter-final round to Char-Lan in two close sets. The Cruaders were subsequently unhorsed in the semifinals.
